Who spilled the sunset?

“We grasped for sunset yesterday, one last time, among a cackling bunch of wood ducks and the silence of twilight. Maybe, for once, the sky might lend a hint of ochre happiness in our lives.”

I don’t get out of the house much these days as the baby keeps me busy round the clock. But sometimes I spend a few minutes out in the backyard to watch the evening sky. Thankfully, it is also my baby’s sleep time, so I can peacefully enjoy the cool winter breeze and admire the splendor of the sky.

As the months passed by, I have noticed the change in the sun’s position at sunset – gradually moving from right to left. By December it would no longer set behind my house.

The best sunsets are usually captured on partly-clouded days and after the rain. Not all days are favorable, but sometimes I get to capture some fascinating stuff happening up there. Here’s a collection of Sydney sunset photos.

After the rain

I was hoping for some clouds to hang around at sunset the next day and I wasn’t disappointed.

The below sunset was captured on a day when thick clouds had gathered in the sky. I wasn’t even hoping to see any color. But just as the sun went down, the whole sky turned pink and orange. This patch right over my head was so bright that it drenched the backyard in a light orange hue.

While the clouds looked like molten lava.

The sky had been unadventurous in the last few days. No clouds. No dramatic sunsets. Except on this day when a bunch of clouds happened to fly in the west.

  1. I’ve been skywatching a lot lately, as our skies have been showering tremendous blessings upon us this season. Your pictures make me happy, Raj.

    Love and Light.

  2. The sky is such a tremendous place to watch. It calms me down and helps me see the beauty for real. Your pictures just did that to me today. While here in London, a slighter grey is still left after the rains, yours have a lovely orange hue after the rains. Such fantastic sky pictures that make me look keenly at it.
