Driving along the Federal Highway, about 40 km from Canberra (Australia), you will come across a wide stretch of land. Afar, the mountain range appears to be drenched in hues of blue, and along it runs a lake about 25 km in width.Â
I was told that about 20 years ago, the water from Lake George would reach the Highway, the spot from where these pictures were taken. I am baffled how so much of the water body is lost over some time.

Said to be about a million years old, George Lake is a closed lake. There’s no outflow to river or sea. The water fluctuates during the monsoons and there have been times when it was full, but the water subsides just as quickly.
According to legends, the water is believed to seep into another world. Now that must be a fascinating story. I need to find out where that came from 🙂

Another view from a vantage point further down the road. The lake is also known by its Aboriginal names, Weereewa or Ngungara.Â

Don’t forget to check out the stunning Tulip Top Gardens nearby 🙂

Beautiful pictures. I am noting down all possible for my Australia trip
I used to drive past this lake a number of times. Once, no water at all could be seen. Just reeds. It really is a disappearing lake.
Woah! Raj, the pictures are breathtaking. And the tulip garden surely seemed like heaven. And do blog about the story. 😉
Great pics and fascinating travelogue
These are beautiful pics of a beautiful place..thanks for this virtual trip 🙂
Beautiful! Such a gorgeous place.
Maybe the water disappeared due to pollution?
It's called Global Warming or you have been using too much of the water round there
