This April, I’m participating in the April A to Z Blogging Challenge with a creative twist -learning and sharing Zentangle patterns! Each day, I’ll explore a new pattern, uncovering its beauty and include it in my zentangle inspired artwork. At the end of the challenge, I hope to have a completed artwork with all the patterns I learned in this challenge. Join me on this artistic journey as I embrace mindfulness, creativity, and the joy of tangling!
Zentangle is an art form focused on creating structured patterns through repetitive strokes. It’s a meditative and creative practice designed to promote relaxation, mindfulness, and self-expression. Numerous tangle patterns are available on the Tangle Patterns website. A great resource to learn and explore new drawing styles.
Day 1 of Challenge – A for Arukas
I have chosen a radiating starburst pattern for the first day of the challenge.
Arukas is a mesmerizing Zentangle pattern that radiates outward like a blooming starburst. Created by Molly Hollibaugh, it starts with a central circle and expands with curved lines, forming a dynamic, web-like effect. Its repetitive flow makes it perfect for mindful, meditative drawing sessions. You can read more about it and find inspiration and tutorials in the post – Arukas on the Tangle Patterns website.
Arukas Zentangle Tutorial

I tried a couple of different designs. I think they will look great as a border in my artwork. I absolutely enjoyed drawing this tangle pattern. The final design is so unexpected when you are in the middle of drawing lines and circles.

I tried a few different designs for Arukas. I will be adding on to this Zentangle-inspired artwork as we progress through the A to Z challenge.

Zentangles can be drawn by anyone, anytime. All you need is paper and a pen. Given that we lead very busy lives, the simplicity of drawing a Zentangle helps us incorporate creativity into our lives.
Learn a new pattern tomorrow as I continue working on this art piece.

A great theme for your A-Z. The result is so pretty but I think it’s easier said than done for non-arty folks like me. 🙂
Wow! This is so interesting, Rajlakshmi! I never came across this word earlier, so this was something new that I learnt today. What emerges is a very unusual pattern—the Arukas! I’d love to try it out myself. 🙂
I’ve never tried Zentangle. This design looks interesting. Thanks for sharing.
This is a very unique topic Rajlakshmi. What kind of pens/pencils are you using for your zentangle artworks? It looks very neat and impressive!
So thrilled to see that you’re still blogging very actively 🙂
All the best for the challenge.
Cheers,
