Solitude Typography | How to draw Zentangle Inspired Artwork

Hello, my lovelies! I am back with another Zentangle-Inspired artwork – a typography of the word ‘Solitude‘. In this post, I have shared the creative process behind this artwork and some zentangle art tutorials of the patterns I used in my design.

The steps to drawing a zentangle-inspired artwork are pretty simple. Choose a fine-liner pen of your choice, and pick any blank paper. I draw in a notebook, but I also use card stocks. I start by outlining the word with a pencil. Since my calligraphy skills aren’t that good, it usually takes me a couple of attempts to get it right.

This also helps you gauge how much space your Zentangle will occupy and how you’ll fill the surrounding areas. I left enough space within the outline so that the word could be clearly identified once the tangle patterns were added.

If you are unsure of which pattern to use first, start with bubbles, swirls, dots, or tiny flowers. You will find a lot of these in my artwork. As you progress, you can look for tangle patterns and tutorials to add to your artwork. The key is to enjoy the process without worrying about perfection. I love this journey of exploring new patterns, learning along the way, and giving myself an opportunity to sit back and relax.

Trust the process. I go through a rollercoaster of emotions while drawing. Doubts emerge from nowhere. I will reiterate. Trust the process. Let your ideas and the pen guide you.

This pattern turned out so pretty. Honestly, when I started drawing those squiggly lines, I wasn’t sure where I was going with this. But I kept going, experimenting with some old ideas, and this is how it turned out. I think there are a few tangle patterns similar to this, though I can’t recall their names. I used a dark pencil color to add shadows and refine the outlines.

  1. It’s so beautiful Raj. I love your zentangles, they’re so inspiring and complex! 😀
I love to draw, but always feel it’s beyond me, but have started on smaller pieces because I keep telling my daughter it’s okay to keep trying. I tell that to myself now, and I love the process. When I draw, it’s colorful and it just relaxes something in me! Eventually she joins and it’s nice.
