Chronicles of creaking bones – oohs, aahs and uffs of life in late 30s

Well, holy samosa and flying spaghetti, is it the end of September already? Sometimes, when I’m lounging around doing zilch, the realization hits me like a ton of bricks. Does time speed up as you age? I’m starting to think there’s a conspiracy theory about this rapid time warp, some convoluted interstellar like phenomenon. And if the relentless march of time doesn’t make you feel ancient, trust me, your creaky backbone will serve as a daily reminder.

I didn’t realise how bad it can get until I pulled my muscles by sneezing wrong. How on earth could you sneeze wrong! I like to consider myself pretty active, I dabble in yoga, pilates, and those outrageous instagram fitness challenges that make you discover new muscles with every push-up. Yet, every morning, I wake up to discover a new knot or a sore spot, emerging like a dishevelled ghost in the morning, moaning, “40 is near… it’s neeeaaarrrrr”.

At any given moment, things inside my body are creaking, knotting, or just plain aching in places I didn’t even know could hurt. Places that can’t be reached without digging the spiky corners of foam roll into your muscles. Or frantically reaching for a massage ball to knead out that weird sore sensation in my glutes, or pressing my shoulder blades against doors, walls, or the floor, rolling back and forth, which my kid refers as the wriggling worm.

Just today, I woke up with aching shoulders for no reason at all. Made me suspect if I was carrying a ghost on my shoulder like in the movie Shutter.

It takes a solid round of cat-cow movements, spinal rolls and side stretches to oil the hinges and gently remind my hips that they’re not quite 40 yet. So could they please behave a bit younger.

I recently took part in a yoga challenge where the main theme was fallen. It didn’t take me long to take photos. I was naturally falling all the time. 🤣

My body has changed a lot, which is quite expected when you age. Sigh! yes, I do feel a hint of sorrow when I look back at my youthful photos, a gentle reminder of a time (and jawline) that can not be returned. Maybe I should get off instagram altogether, because it makes me insecure about things I don’t think I would have noticed otherwise.

  1. You’re such an inspiration! I marvel at the yoga poses you do — my body creaks at protest if I attempt such things. I think my flexibility has improved since I started, but I’ve still got a ways to go before I achieve your kind of yogic ability. I hope your pulled muscles ease up soon!

    1. Thank you. The muscle cramp comes and goes 🤣 Yes, flexibility and mobility improves a lot with regular practice. I myself struggle with consistency sometimes. Let’s just keep going at it. 😁
