On the third day of my epic 8-day road trip in New Zealand, I found myself gallivanting in the enchanting world of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth where flowers bloomed at each corner and houses shrank in size. The stream glistened in the sunlight as I trotted along narrow paths in the dream-like lush green rolling hills. Hobbiton Movie Set, situated in the heart of Waikato, is a working farm in the small village of Matamata, about a 2.5-hour drive from Auckland, New Zealand.
Before we embark on our village stroll, let me fill you in on some vital details to ensure your visit is smooth sailing.

Hobbiton Movie Set – Guided Walking Tour
Our tour commenced at approximately 2 pm. A scenic bus ride from the reception took us through picturesque landscapes for about 10 minutes until we reached the entrance of the Hobbiton Movie Set.
As our journey began, our guide regaled us with fascinating tidbits about the making of “The Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit” trilogies. Hobbiton was initially constructed as a film set for these iconic movies, with meticulous attention to detail to bring Tolkien’s vision to life.
Walking through the quaint hobbit holes scattered across the landscape, I couldn’t help but marvel at the craftsmanship and dedication that went into every aspect of the set design. I half-anticipated a hobbit emerging from the door, ready to invite us in for a delightful lunch.
What astonished me further were the gardens. Each residence boasted impeccably maintained gardens, brimming with blooming flowers and thriving vegetable patches. Given my fondness for plants, I couldn’t resist pausing at every exquisite bloom to admire its beauty. As a result, I often found myself trailing behind the tour group, being the last to leave one spot and arrive at the next on time.
One of the most intriguing aspects of Hobbiton is its seamless integration into the natural surroundings. The lush greenery, rolling hills, and tranquil lakes create a picturesque backdrop that feels both magical and serene. It’s no wonder director Peter Jackson chose this location to depict the idyllic Shire, home to Frodo Baggins and his fellow hobbits
I felt a strong urge to swing open this door and build a home inside, settle in the slow rhythm of cottage life, and grow Hollyhocks and Snapdragons. Perhaps try my hand at baking bread – although the outcome could be quite disastrous. 😛
Just me, breathing happiness.
As we explored the winding pathways of Hobbiton, we encountered charming details at every turn. From colorful laundry hanging on miniature clotheslines to intricately carved wooden doors, and miniature food stalls where my son insisted on selling us some cheese and bread. Every corner seemed to hold a delightful surprise.
My heart was full. I was walking through a fantastical realm, feeling and breathing a world that originated from the books. Can you picture how ecstatic this bookworm was?
One of the highlights of the tour was visiting the Green Dragon Inn, where we enjoyed a complimentary pint of ale and cider. In the book, Green Dragon is a meeting place for all the residents of Hobbiton.
Stepping inside, I was greeted by the warm glow of lanterns and the cozy atmosphere of a traditional English pub. It was the perfect place to relax and soak in the ambiance of Hobbiton, surrounded by fellow fans of Tolkien’s timeless tales.
Experiencing the Green Dragon firsthand was like stepping into the pages of the book. Gathering at this iconic meeting place, just as described in the novel, felt surreal. Never did I imagine I would find myself enjoying a refreshing mug of cider by the fireside.
Fun fact – The Green Dragon Inn serves specially brewed ales based on traditional recipes, giving visitors a taste of Middle-earth’s finest beverages
As the tour of the Hobbiton Movie Set came to an end, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of wonder and nostalgia for the world of Middle-earth. Hobbiton had truly captured my imagination, leaving me with cherished memories and a deeper appreciation for the magic of storytelling. As I bid farewell to this enchanting place, I knew that its charm would stay with me long after my journey had ended.
Also, look at this view. How could one not keep falling in love with this land of the long white cloud?
Magical is the word. This is so quaintly beautiful. The greenery is stunning and the flowers so vibrant. I am marveling at how much effort must be going into maintaining a place like this.
Wow!! This is breathtaking, Raj. I can imagine your excitement. The landscape is simply mesmerizing! 😊
What a magical place it is!! How wonderful it must have felt walking through this enchanting place, with those adorable little houses and the beautiful gardens. Tell me, will this set be permanently standing here to regale the public? Did you take a peep inside the houses? ;P
