After my last drawing of a dragonfly with 3D Zentangle Gems, I didn’t really get a chance to work on something big, but I have been drawing zentangles on a smaller scale, experimenting with shading techniques, and testing pencil colors on different mediums. In this post, I will share a few tutorials I made on how to draw zentangle gems or ZenGem
My previous artwork – Zentangle Dragonfly
For the new zentangle drawing, I reused a cardstock that I had stored for scrapbooking. I felt that the pencil color looked very different on this medium when compared to regular paper. I also had a hard time blending the colors as it would remove the layers and wouldn’t give me a smooth finish. But anyhow, this is how it turned out. Just be mindful of the medium you are using.
I start with lighter shades – a mix of yellows and then softly add red and pink shades. I would start darkening the corners while keeping the center light – mostly a blend of yellow and red. The darker corners give it that popping-out look. The final 3Dish look is added by highlighting the corners with a white pen.
I have also uploaded a video tutorial on YouTube for the above Zentangle gem.
Here’s another one, using a similar technique.
Below is the YouTube tutorial on how to draw zentangle gems.
I created a YouTube channel to post my artwork/craft and tutorials – @creative_outburst Art | Papercraft | Journal. Shorts are easier to upload compared to full video tutorials. Imagine my surprise when I tried to upload a full video of about 5 min long and it took more than 2 hours to upload. While I can upload shorts from my phone in just a matter of seconds.
Still trying to figure out how to make proper tutorial videos. 🙂 I welcome any feedback, let me know in the comment section.

This is lovely, Raj. Watching the video gave me a clearer view of the process. Video tutorials aren’t easy to do. Shorts are fine you know. I have a YouTube channel where I upload my poems. Not very regular though, because of the technical difficulties in getting a video out.
Thank you. Yeah uploading is so hard. I have been meaning to do some more but barely get time.
I loved the gems, Raj! Thank you for sharing the technique. Nowadays, I am working on zentangle art and it is such a delight to see the finished artwork. I am creating letters with tangle pattern, and I am loving every moment of it. Once I am done with the letters, I will try making the gems. I have subscribed to your YouTube channel.
I agree, uploading a video takes hours! I created a reel for IG — my very first — and it was a 9 minute reel that I cropped to 1 and a half minute, but it took more than 45 minutes to upload and had three failed attempts. I would like to share more reels for doodles for anxiety, but I am taking my time. 😛
I am so glad you like it. Uploading long videos takes so much effort that it puts me off sometimes. Editing, getting right music and upload time. Sigh! There’s no escape though 😄
I remember an earlier post you’d done about these gem stone designs and I still cannot get over how pretty they are.
Thank you so much 😀
