Bobbin Head | Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park

As the lockdown restrictions are slowly eased in the state of NSW (Australia), we are back to spending our weekends exploring some of the beautiful spots around my home in Sydney. Of course, while maintaining social distancing rules. This time, we explored the gorgeous locales of Bobbin Head in Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park.

A few weeks back when we were blessed with balmy weather, I thought it would be a great opportunity to take my in-laws to Bobbin Head. They are an elderly couple and still getting used to the Australian winter. With fantastic waterfront views and spacious picnic ground, Bobbin Head is perfect for spending time with family and friends. I also have an active toddler who has only recently discovered the joys of running wild in a park.

There are two picnic grounds on either side of the bridge with ample car parking, toilets and BBQ facilities. Tall pine trees outline the creek. A well-maintained pavement also runs along the waterside.

My son thought it would be a great idea to roll his pram on the sidewalks. While my husband kept a watchful eye on him, I laid down a picnic mat and made sandwiches. Brioche buns with raw capsicum, onions, and spinach for my mother-in-law as she is vegetarian. While the rest of us stuffed our sandwiches with a good helping of some aioli, fish, and chips (bought at the restaurant nearby).

Mangrove Boardwalk – Bobbin Head

We didn’t realize there was a mangrove boardwalk just behind the picnic area until we decided to walk along the waterside to check out walking tracks. As it was a bit late to start Gibberagong track, we went for a 10-minute long Mangrove Boardwalk – an absolutely beautiful and well-maintained boardwalk.

After crossing the bridge, I was pleasantly surprised to be surrounded by dense lime-green foliage. The leaves catching the evening last. Below the boardwalk, you could see an extensive ecosystem of mangroves. I had never walked between mangroves before. It felt amazing to be suddenly transported between such raw beauty of nature.

I had to carry my little one for the most part of the walk as there are no railings and he can easily jump into the water. Thankfully, the boardwalk is stroller and wheelchair friendly so while returning we plopped him in the stroller. He wasn’t very happy about it, but safe. 🙂

We spent about 3 hours at Bobbin Head. I will recommend this to anyone looking for a place to spend a relaxing time with family.

The place closes at 5 pm.
