Twenty years ago I came to realize one of the quirkiness of being a teenager. I was totally incapable of acting cool in front of good looking guys. It was beyond my understanding how a class-topper-vice-captain kind of girl would turn into a giggling bunch of nonsense at the sight of a handsome guy.
Like every girl in my high school, I had a crush on the School Captain. Seriously, who doesn’t? But it wasn’t him that turned this smart girl’s brain into a cabbage.
It wasn’t even a boy from our school. I spotted this brown-haired handsomeness outside our school gate, waiting for someone on his striking red bicycle. Each afternoon after the school was over, while waiting for the bus to arrive, I would stealthily glance and sigh at his perfect existence dazzling in the sunlight. This was way before Twilight and Edward, the vampire, came into existence.
So one fine day, I confided to a friend of mine. And blurted out that if she dared to talk to him I would treat her with ice-cream. I have no idea why I said that. See, the brain turns into cabbage!
Now, she was known for being bold. Even her gait was like a military man, resounding and no-nonsense. Without thinking twice off she went, towards the boy. I stood still in utter shock, my heart ready to leap out of the mouth. I watched them talk and laugh and then my heart simply stopped beating as he looked in my direction.
The next few moments of my life are blurry. I must have walked towards them instead of bolting because all I remember is buying milk wali Kulfi for both of them. I do not remember asking anything sensible, probably I was just making noises from my mouth. My friend did all the questioning. Asked him where he studied, which grade etc, while I just stood there smiling like an imbecile.
Oh! to be young and feel the first brush of love and crushes.
