Zentangle Inspired Artworks

I used to write ‘restless’ as one of my personality traits in the colorful slam-books that were extremely  popular in school.  I don’t know if they are still popular among the current generation.

But as I grew up and started indulging more in art and craft, I started receiving appreciation for my patience. Trust me, I was surprised.  If there is one virtue I didn’t possess,  it was patience.

But as I write this post,  I have come to realize that I really have grown more calm and patient over the years. I don’t become agitated as I used to before,  neither can you extract a reaction even if a cockroach is floating in my tea.  Nasty imagery I know,  but true story.

Sometimes I wonder if I am just growing old.

Well,  atleast it comes with an advantage. I made a lot of Zentangle inspired art in the past few weeks,  mostly bookmarks as they are pretty easy to make and complete.

I have been using pens from Unipen ever since I started making zentangles. A lot of artists use Sharpie or Micron pens. I have not used Micron yet, but occasionally use Sharpie. What turns me off about the latter is its strong smell  that ends up giving me a headache. I completely avoid it these days.

I love the variety of sizes available in Unipen,  plus they are easy on the pocket too. 😊 They work great on normal paper, but not on other surfaces, including paper with glossy finish, or  watercolored. For that I use an ink pen. You can’t do much detailing as the tip is thicker,  but it’s great for hand lettering.

I don’t like leaving an artwork incomplete as it keeps nagging at the back of my mind  through out the week. So the bigger ones require better planning.  But the most difficult task I feel is to figure out what to draw.  I take days to come up with new ideas.  Sometimes they strike me at the oddest hour,  and sometimes I have to go in search for them in Pinterest or Instagram.

This was actually meant to be another Typography, but I made a spelling mistake.  Sigh! Can you imagine the frustration.  I was so disappointed at my carelessness.

This is how it looked before I fixed the drawing. I misplaced E and A. My friend gave me the idea to place a paper over the letters and draw over it…  But well,  I  was lazy. 😊

Well,  I atleast know what I am going to draw next.

  1. The artwork is lovely, Raj. You are one extremely talented lady. 🙂

As far as growing more patient with age, I guess that is true of most people, though I still can’t count patience as one of my virtues. Someday..I hope..someday..

    1. Thank you so much… I guess it might be something to do with age as well. I guess after sometime we just don’t care 😅😅

  2. This is something amazing I have ever come across! One definitely needs a lot of patience to conceptualize and then meticulously execute the drawing! Hats off to you…please take a bow!

  3. You are a super talented woman and I will be lying if I said I’m not jealous. I need to get back to drawing sometime soon.

You keep going, you awesome thing, you! ❤

  4. Unipen, haven’t tried those. I can understand the smell issue. Some are really pungent. Don’t bother much about the spelling mistakes. Imperfections make better stories. Patience is my best virtue but I have a very active mind. Art is one of the best ways to bring calm of all sorts. I’m meditating these days and I can believe the kind of changes it brings. You do yoga. So you would understand.

    Love your artwork, Raj.

    1. Thank you Saru. These are the things that bring peace … Simple but effective practices. Yes, imperfections do make better stories 😀

  5. I love your zentangles! They’re so intricate and I love the fact that you include so many flowers and blooms in them too. Zentangles are an excellent way of developing patience and reducing stress, as of course is art. Perhaps that’s where the patience stems from – your art practice! 🙂

    1. Yes I love flower illustrations, they make everything look so pretty. Glad you mentioned that. Thank you so much 😀

  6. Do you make up the designs as you go or do you derive inspiration from other patterns?

Also, I remember seeing one of your posts a looooooong time ago on Instagram about this and thinking heyyyy I would like to do that when I’m chilling. Turns out, its the most relaxing thing ever, this zentangling, even if I’m not very good at it 😛 Thank you for the introduction ❤

    1. It’s so relaxing… You can easily shut off the world 😀as for drawing, sometimes I just draw continuously… With whatever designs that come to my mind or fits in. Other times I look for new tutorials on Pinterest, specially the tricky ones.
      Thank you so much 😀

  7. Your artwork is beautiful and each piece looks more intricate than the next. I am going to share this with my mother-in-law. She’s an artist too and would love the tips about the Sharpie and micron pens. Simply gorgeous work!

  8. Wow! I loved each one of the drawings, Raj!
You know, I think we calm down due to the art we practice, as in the art of Zentangling. It may, of course, be ageing, but it’s more because of the art therapy that we calm down and become immune to stuff going around us that may have left us agitated earlier.
I need to look up that pen you mentioned.
    Thank you for the info!

    1. I agree, art does make me immune to things that are going around. Thank you so much for your kind words 😀

  9. You are right. You are growing old and also wiser 😀 The zentangle works are fabulous. A couple of years back, I bought an adult colouring book for myself and it was all zentangle works (the word I had no idea at that time). I couldn’t have thought then that people can actually draw them with hand.

    1. Hahaha thank you so much 😀 the adult coloring books are so popular here. They go off the shelve as soon as the new edition comes in.
