YogaEveryday: Being a Wannabe Crow #atozchallenge

My theme for this year’s  #atozchallenge is – 26 Yogasana. So brace yourself for 26 days of stretching, backbends and inversions, as I take you along my upside down evenings, sincerely hoping that you will find these posts helpful 🙂

Bakasana or Crow Pose

My husband never lets me practice this pose in the living room for the fear of me crashing into his precious TV 😛 . This is the first pose that made me realize the importance of gaze. You need to look few inches away from the fingertips, if you look too far, you might end up frog jumping (and thus the crash) and if you look down, you might end up falling flat on the face (experience my dear friends).

Bakasana or Crow pose is a great starter to arm balances. If practiced regularly, this will strengthen your arms and core, which will help you to achieve other incredible arm balances. This yoga asana requires you to  round your back and engage the core to lift the hips.

For Beginners – Rest your knees above elbows, and raise one leg – drop it and raise the other one. Practice like this till you are comfortable in this pose.

Here’s a variation of Crow Pose called Baby Crow.

Disclaimer: I am not an Instructor or Yoga teacher, only a regular Hatha Yoga practitioner who is passionate about fitness. I am writing this series to detail my learning and experience during the practice. Please consult a Physician/Doctor before starting any exercise regime as some of the poses might contradict with your existing medical issues, for example injuries related to spinal cord, knee, ankle, wrists, neck, medical conditions like Migraine, Diabetics, Asthma etc.

Stay Strong and Humble! Namaste.

  1. I think this is one of the most important information for me. And i am glad reading your article. But want to remark on few general things, The site style is great, the articles is really great : D. Good job, cheers

  2. My cousin teaches Holy Yoga. I’m not a yoga practitioner myself, but I certainly admire strength, flexibility and calm!

  3. You are there again, making me feel so inflexibile. I used to do this asana in school days, Now all that seems to be ages away. Thous I can do many other poses, my hands seem to have lost some strength off late.

  4. I’ve recently been trying this pose to strengthen my arms to do the Peacock pose but find it really very hard. Thanks for this tip ….I will try and slowly build strength in my wrists

  5. I won’t lie. I do suspect sometimes, no make that always, that your bones are made of rubber!! How do you manage such difficult poses? I am still learning and these poses look a little intimidating! Beautiful pics btw 🙂

  6. I loved reading about Crow asana, but I doubt if I can do it. I am someone who will definitely crash into anything around me before I even assume a decent Crow asana!

  7. While I haven’t tried this pose, looking at the pictures I doubt I’ll ever give it a shot!! But you are the rubber woman, right! What do you know! 😛

    Cheers

  8. Hahaha! How about the pre-baby crow? Where you round your back, yes, but with your knees (down to your toes) firmly on the ground, and your elbows and upper arms too! Hehehe! Will that work? 😛

  9. I practice yoga regularly, have done since I was 20 years old but of late, thanks to a job that leaves me tired out my practice has become intermittent, my core weak. This asana is a challenge for me – I never really liked it much but have decided to master it now.
    Nice photos.

  10. This looks so difficult — I appreciate you sharing the Baby crow – a variation that one could start of with 🙂 but i can see how the arms and core will need to be very strong to do this. But your point about the gaze is so interesting – I have never really paid attention to my gaze when i am working out – my focus is on just surviving 🙂

  11. That looks pretty tough! Not sure I’m ready for that, yet. Think I’ll just practice the corpse pose a bit longer… zzzzzzz. I’m EXPERT at the corpse pose. It’s my favorite!
