Summary(Amazon)

Very little has gone right in Nithya’s young life. So, when a proposal
from a young, handsome NRI comes along, her mother jumps at the
opportunity and packs her daughter off to the US with her perfect groom.

Nithya seems to have settled in with Ashok, ostensibly happy, if as
yet childless, in her new life. When an old flame comes back into her
life, however, the cracks in her perfect marriage begin to show.

Why I loved the book?

In short “The Perfect Groom” is a novelette about a young woman, trapped in a loveless marriage, awaiting a day when she can walk away from the relationship. Can she escape the fate that her Chittappa enforced on her? Can she be happy and live a life with the one she truly loves? That is for you to find out.
I finished the book in two hours. The story is short but it keeps you hooked. An overbearing mother-in-law forcing Nithya for a grandson, probing relatives and a shocking secret about her husband that she found only after the wedding, Nithya’s life isn’t an easy one. And at every insult targeted towards her, I felt a pinch in my heart.  She is one of those self sacrificing souls who would do anything for their family, but what I love about her is she still dreams of being independent. Even in crisis, she has a goal and a plan. And she isn’t gloating over her not-so-fairy-tale life.

I couldn’t relate to her at first because I am not that sacrificing kind, but as I read, I wanted her to be happy. The author had made her character very real and I was rooting for her all the way. It was a reason why I could not put down the book. I wanted her to have a happy ending.

I appreciate the decision that Nithya took towards the end and the maturity of both Nithya and Vasu in handling their relationship. Instead of rushing into the arms of a perfect man, she moved away and built her dreams. She lived a life that she had always wanted. And only when she realized that, the one final missing piece in her life is love, did she went back looking for it.
Vasu’s character is quite childish at times, but the decision he made towards end, made me love him more. I remember being so relieved when Nithya met him again. Those are some wonderful moments that the author has captured beautifully.

I won’t say this is a unique book with unique story. But it has an easy breezy flow, fast paced storyline, sweet romantic moments and a compelling character of protagonist – yup you might enjoy reading the book.

  1. I will read it sometime in future. I think books like these might benefit young women who are on the verge of getting married, more. Not sure if any of them are reading such books! My reading has increased tremendously now but I am juggling between classics, fiction and non fiction books. Being a slow reader doesn't help!

    1. I agree that this book might attract female readers more than male readers as it is about a woman who is fighting all odds and trying to be independent. In my opinion female crowd relates to this more than men. Thanks for your thoughful comment.

  2. I have just finished reading this and will review it soon…I like books from Indireads maybe because they are quite simple… And I think your review covers most of what I felt after reading it..

  3. Certainly worth reading although, I don't understand the concept of loveless marriage. It may have been a thing in the past, an 80 or even 60 years ago, but after that, families became smaller, girls became independent, parents became broad minded, and today, I fail to understand why the "loveless marriage" phrase is even in use. You are with someone long enough, you understand the person better, be able to see the hidden virtues etc., and gradually, you love that person. No?
PS: I am NOT talking about certain reporting managers 😛

    1. hahaha reporting managers!! 😛 😛
I do understand what you are saying are. Today girls are very independent and cannot remain trapped. That's why I said I couldn't relate to her. But then these cases are possible too… even though when a girl remains in the marriage just for the sake of her parents. Although if you read the book, you will know that she does have a plan to escape all that.
Thank you so much for your thoughful comment 🙂
