Namdroling Monastery, South India

Let me take you to the beautiful Namdroling Nyingmapa Monastery

I was able to strike off Coorg and Ooty from my “must visit ” list thanks to the long weekend. We drove from Bangalore early in the morning, but were still unable to beat the rush hour traffic. After navigating through jampacked roads, it was almost afternoon by the time we reached the monstery.

I was very much surprised to find a Tibetian settlement in the southern parts of India. Nestled between Mysore and Coorg, this place is home to around 5000 Lamas. Surrounded by sprawling green fields, the golden colored monastery shines from a distance. There are schools, hospital and nunnery too, the top of each building is painted in golden color – presenting an image of mini Tibet.

  1. Bylakuppe is the largest Tibetan settlements in south India. The govt has given them land and administrative powers. They are self sustaining. The monastery is one of its kind, very beautiful isnt it?
