Updated – March 2020 :: I visited Shillong in the year 2010, along with family. This trip will remain one of the most wonderful and funfilled trips I ever had. Listing in this post some of the things to do in Shillong.

After a long beautiful rejuvenating vacation, I am back to the scorching city of Chennai. Enjoyed the Continuous summer rain that drenched me in Dibrugarh, the shivering cold in Cherrapunji was a refreshing break, followed by shopping spree continued in Guwahati. While the cool breeze in Shillong embraced me, Jorhat – my hometown was draped in the colors of Rongali Bihu. I will give a detailed account later, as of now enjoy some of the snapshots from my Shillong road trip also known as the Scotland of the East 🙂

Our trip started in Guwahati (Assam, India) where we took a shared Tempo towards Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya, about 99 km away. You can also hire a private car or taxi. The journey was not without any adventure as the breaks of the Tempo failed midway. But somehow the driver managed to get us into the city. We found a lovely hotel in the heart of the city and booked for 3 days. Just outside the hotel, we found a place to hire a car that would take us to popular places in Shillong.   

 
 

Shillong Peak

This Peak is the highest point in Shillong, providing a panoromic view of the city, the fields and the mountains.

ELEPHANT FALLS

 
Located outside the Shillong city, this waterfall was in the shape of an Elephant, which was destroyed by an earthquake. It is a popular two tiered waterfall just outside the city.

The footpath leads to the bottom of the falls, which then leads to a small lake.
 

Umiam Lake (Barapani)

 
What striked the most about Umiam Lake is how peaceful it felt by just the sight of its vast shores, surrounded by rolling hills. You can even hire a boat and have fun boating.
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 

View Near Duwan Sing Syiem Bridge

Our driver stopped at this lookout point on the way to Cherrapunji. The vastness of these gorgeous mountainsides makes one feel very small in comparison.
 
 
 
 
 

Nohkalikai Falls or Seven Sisters falls

Localted near Cherrapunji, it is India’s tallest plunge waterfall. The lookout provides some dramatic views of the Shillong landscape. The area is surrounded by rolling hills which will make you understand why Shillong is called the Scotland of India.
