When 8 years ago he went as an NCC cadet to Delhi for Republic Day, we hadn’t even imagined that someday he would walk down the prestigious Rajpath, even though three generations of our family were/are in defence forces. In fact, on his return my Mom’s only worry was his bag full of unwashed sweaty clothes and mud laden boots π She made sure they were left on the porch, and scrubbed his face red trying to remove all the tan π
For 3 months we have been waiting for this. I was at my Uncle’s place today, had hooked the laptop to his TV, and was literally staring at the countdown. I am so thankful for the existence of Doordarshan National, for telecasting the parade live on Youtube.
It was a classic “Anu on TV… Anu on TV” moment. But never had I imagined how overwhelming it would be. I haven’t met my brother in 3 years. To watch him all smartly dressed, leading a contingent of four legged soldiers…oh I still get teary. Same with my sister who luckily was at Rajpath. And in between wiping tears and blinking eyes we watched him. Yeah, we are a ridiculously emotional family. π

I can so imagine you hooked on to the television set. I watched the entire parade and it is a proud moment for any Indian. Needless to say, how we who are directly related to the Forces gets all teary-eyed and overwhelmed. Congrats dear! π

I can fully understand why you would be so proud. Good for your brother leading that army dog squad. I'd love to know more about that. What do they do with the dogs? So exciting! I enjoyed looking at your photos and reading about the parade. I was in the Canadian Air Reserve myself back in the 1980s and was a musician marching on parade. I remember the thrill of a parade with all the pomp and ceremony and pride. Great you have these special photos to treasure.

Wow, Raji! Truly a proud and emotional moment for the family! Heck! Even I'm feeling proud in a he-is-my-friend's-brother kinda way! And you know, I watched the entire parade (on TV) this time after almost 15 years! Just told my Dad that the Dog Squad leader is Raji's brother. He looked at me blankly. Then I said "the yoga girl". He was like "ohhhhhh! waahhh!" π
What a wonderful post. As the daughter of an ex serviceman I can completely understand what you mean . I actually find it hard to hold back the tears when I hear the citations of medal winners. And of course seeing the lady officers on parade truly gives me the goosies
