That Proud Moment !!

Of course like any silly emotional sister I was teary eyed, and I think my Dad  too choked with emotions when I spoke to him on phone. Well, that’s my brother for you, giving us all sorts of “feels” for the past 26 years.

When 8 years ago he went as an NCC cadet to Delhi for Republic Day, we hadn’t even imagined that someday he would walk down the prestigious Rajpath, even though three generations of our family were/are in defence forces. In fact, on his return my Mom’s only worry was his bag full of unwashed sweaty clothes and mud laden boots πŸ˜› She made sure they were left on the porch, and scrubbed his face red trying to remove all the tan πŸ˜›

For 3 months we have been waiting for this. I was at my Uncle’s place today, had hooked the laptop to his TV, and was literally staring at the countdown. I am so thankful for the existence of Doordarshan National, for telecasting the parade live on Youtube.

It was a classic “Anu on TV… Anu on TV” moment. But never had I imagined how overwhelming it would be. I haven’t met my brother in 3 years. To watch him all smartly dressed, leading a contingent of four legged soldiers…oh I still get teary. Same with my sister who luckily was at Rajpath. And in between wiping tears and blinking eyes we watched him. Yeah, we are a ridiculously emotional family. πŸ˜›

So right now, I am stalking profiles on Instagram, Twitters, News Channel searching for his pictures.

It was after years I saw the Parade. Some very fond memories are associated with it. But what remains same – is the goosebumps I get every time a Lady Officer comes on screen. Extremely inspiring and empowering!!

Ok before I get even more emotional, gotta go back and collect more pictures.  πŸ™‚ Hope you all had a wonderful Republic Day. Jai Hind!!

  2. I can so imagine you hooked on to the television set. I watched the entire parade and it is a proud moment for any Indian. Needless to say, how we who are directly related to the Forces gets all teary-eyed and overwhelmed. Congrats dear! πŸ™‚

  3. I can fully understand why you would be so proud. Good for your brother leading that army dog squad. I'd love to know more about that. What do they do with the dogs? So exciting! I enjoyed looking at your photos and reading about the parade. I was in the Canadian Air Reserve myself back in the 1980s and was a musician marching on parade. I remember the thrill of a parade with all the pomp and ceremony and pride. Great you have these special photos to treasure.

  4. What a special moment for the family! I saw the parade and thanks to your FB status I knew that's your brother. I am always mushy watching the parade and this year because I knew (well, kind of) one particular participant, it was an even mushier experience! Congratulations to the whole family and khandan!

  6. The parade evokes such a sense of national pride; seeing a family member there must be something else! Such a proud moment for your family! Glad that you were able to catch it live. πŸ™‚

  7. Congratulations, Raj. A proud moment, indeed. What a lovely post and although I didn't catch the Republic Day parade here, I was getting goosebumps just reading about it and looking at the pics you shared. πŸ™‚

  8. This is such a wonderful moment and I teared up when I saw the clip and heard the name announced! Silly, I know considering I only know you and nobody else but what an incredibly, goosebump moment. So so happy for you and you deserve to wear that big sis badge of pride. Thrilled.

  9. Rajlakshmi, thankfully I had seen your FB status and picked it up from there. I was proudly announcing to my family that this young soldier leading the contingent is my blogger friend's brother. And Anu immediately said, "The one you wrote the letter to?"
Really a proud moment for your family. πŸ™‚

  10. Hi rajlakshmi…I have been a regular reader of your blog over the last couple of years…but commenting for the first time…indeed a proud moment for your family…best wishes to your brither….BTW in the entire parade the dog squad and the camel contingent were two of 6 year old daughter's favourite parts….

  11. Wow, Raji! Truly a proud and emotional moment for the family! Heck! Even I'm feeling proud in a he-is-my-friend's-brother kinda way! And you know, I watched the entire parade (on TV) this time after almost 15 years! Just told my Dad that the Dog Squad leader is Raji's brother. He looked at me blankly. Then I said "the yoga girl". He was like "ohhhhhh! waahhh!" πŸ˜€

  12. What a wonderful post. As the daughter of an ex serviceman I can completely understand what you mean . I actually find it hard to hold back the tears when I hear the citations of medal winners. And of course seeing the lady officers on parade truly gives me the goosies
