Oh Vanity, What art thou!

Quiz!! What ghastly thing must have made this lovely lady’s eyes pop out in such ScaryMovie5 kind of expression?

And she definitely has the potential to gobble up whole of America.

The expression captured here depicts the moment when they won Miss America Title.

I love watching crowning ceremonies, the moment when they are about reveal new Miss America or Miss World. Two gorgeous women would be holding hands, calmly, quietly, waiting for  judge’s verdict.
And as soon as they announce the name, they go into this epileptic-shock dance, that looks like they are reaching for the paramedic or asthma inhaler, but definitely not the Crown. I mean, just flash your measured smile and wear it, why scare the neighbourhood cat and the dog and the friendly little chameleon?
I wonder if they enact their moves in front of the mirror – going into fits, eyes wide open. Seriously, you need practice to open you mouth that big.

Nina Davuluri was ready to burst into confetti 😀

Out of my many ambitions, being Miss World was one of them, inspired by the then newly crowned Diana Hayden. I didn’t have gloves, so I would wear long white school socks and blow kisses in front of the mirror.
A nice strong tap from my mother’s broom was enough to make me run and solve those obnoxious trigonometry equations.

Do you have any such memories, when you would wear mom’s peticoat and stride in front of the mirror, thinking it to be your beautiful gown? Or am I the only crazy one here?

  1. heheh! lovely post and awesome cinemagraph of Nina!

I think this open-mouth-shock-and-awe trend was started by our very own Sushmita Sen.

  2. LOL 😀 Hilarious, I mean hilariously scary pics. I am sure they practice this… I am yet to see such wide open mouthed reactions in real life!! 😀

  3. Haha…I never had such moments of wanting to emulate them but my sister and I would watch the contests to take the piss out of the whole thing. Right from the dresses to the answers {oh goodness, the answers!!!}, to the expressions you have so wonderfully described….we'd enjoy laughing through it all…

  4. I am sure they practice the 'open mouth big enough for an elephant to amble in' expression. I can imagine the coach telling them to 'open more, open wider' glares.

You wore your mom's petticoat pretending it was a cloak? I did too! 😀

  5. So funny all those girls with their goofy surprised looks. I enjoyed that! Nope, can't say I ever gazed at myself in the mirror imagining myself in one of those pageants. Lots of mirror gazing, yes, but more of the "Woe is me and my life is over because I have a zit" variety.

  6. The picture with the woman's mouth open so atrociously, prompted me to stop by this blog! I'm sure they rehearse it just the way you did.The melodrama is just for that extra WOW kodak moment 😉
    Hilarious post 🙂

  7. OH I bet they practise that a lot .. so you tell us first did you practise before your mom came out with that broom he he he he 🙂

  8. How do you do it, Rajlakshmi? 🙂 Bring out the hillarious memories from your childhood and share them with such panache 🙂 I can almost picture you practicing your acceptance speeches and getting that perfect expression to match ! Thank God for your mom's broom, otherwise the world have missed out on a great engineer and even greater storyteller 😉
